The Problem with Trust – A Reflection on the Dominican Republic
The growing narrative seems to be a fear that the minibars at several DR resorts could have poison in them; that the bottles of rum, vodka and the like are fake or filled with fake/adulterated substances. Much of the reporting seems to indicate that this is the case.

SGNT in Washington, D.C. – NSF SBIR Grant Phase I Conference – Part 2
As I write the post, I’m about half-way between Washington, D.C. and Dallas on our flight back to Tucson, AZ. It has definitely been a fantastic and insightful trip but will be nice getting home and getting back to work. We’re done with our NSF Phase I grant conference which included about 180 companies comprised of approximately 300 attendees spread from across the United States.

SGNT in Washington, D.C. – NSF SBIR Grant Phase I Conference – Part 1
Today is the last day of our grant conference. I’m sitting in hotel lobby reflecting on the last few days drinking a much-desired latte (the hotel coffee was largely unsatisfying). Emil and I arrived in the D.C. area for our National Science Foundation SBIR Phase I Grant workshop.

SGNT Awarded NSF SBIR Phase I Grant! – The Inside Scoop – Part 4
As I sit here writing the last part of the blog post, I’m sitting in a coffee shop in Crystal City just across the Potomac river from Washington, D.C. It feels a bit surreal considering the path we’ve been on to get here.

SGNT Press Conference, Ribbon Cutting, and Reflection - Part 1
Last night the SGNT team took a moment to celebrate. If you’re reading this blog or have been following us, you’re probably familiar that a lot has been happening. Nevertheless, I should still re-cap.

SGNT Awarded NSF SBIR Phase I Grant! – The Inside Scoop – Part 3
Everyone says writing a grant isn’t easy and I suppose that’s partially true. Writing a grant does take hard work, but to me the challenge is in writing a grant that will actually get funded! Lots of grants get written by experts in their field, yet I’ve been told only around 10-20% of submitted SBIR grants receive funding.

A Quick Founder's Story - Part 4
Jack, the stolen iPad, and the inspiration for the solution I have been discussing is what ultimately led us to the start of our journey.

A Quick Founder’s Story – Part 3
Ok, so after explain Jack’s story and the problems incurred, you’re probably saying, “ok ya I get it, but how do you fix this and where do we go from here?”. The reality in this situation is that we simply do not know what happened to the stolen iPad. Was it stolen in the supply chain or at the retail end by a bad customer?

SGNT Awarded NSF SBIR Phase I Grant! – The Inside Scoop – Part 2
As I previously mentioned, we only had barely two weeks to get this grant proposal written and submitted. On top of that, we hadn’t started any of the registration process that is required!

A Quick Founder's Story - Part 2
In the last blog post, A Quick Founder’s Story – Part 1, I explained the story of Jack getting a stack of magazines instead of an iPad. If you do a quick internet search on this topic you will find countless articles detailing a similar story with different products and re-sellers. The reality in this story is – we simply do not know what happened to the iPad.

A Quick Founder's Story - Part 1
One of the questions we are often asked is, “how did you start this?”, or “how did you come up with this idea?”. Before I get into the actual start, its best to start with a quick story:

Team and Community – Part 2
In my last post, Team and Community – Part 1, I discussed the start of our journey into the community. Simply stated, this was accomplished by persistently networking. One of the gems we learned during this process – is to share. Nothing is more obnoxious to me than going to an event and having someone shove their profession into my ears and their business card into my hand. My approach?

Team and Community – Part 1
Building a startup company isn’t easy. Regardless of the resources and technology in your tool belt, you still start at ground zero and have to figure out how to develop and sell a novel technology. There are also the cliché sayings, “there is no ‘I’ in team”, and, “it takes a village…”. While many of us have heard these ad-nauseum, they’re true for a reason! You simply cannot do it on your own, and an amazing community will accelerate the process!
